On July 13, 2006, EA announced The Lord of the Rings: The White Council, an open-world Lord of the Rings adventure based on the events surrounding the White Council as recorded in Tolkien's novels. Unfortunately, Saruman convinced the group that Sauron was not a threat, after which he began seeking the One Ring for himself. Upon returning to Dol Guldur at a later time, Gandalf learned that the Necromancer was, in fact, Sauron, and he urged the White Council to act. ![]() Not long before The Hobbit, however, he was a member of the White Council, a group that was formed shortly after Gandalf visited Dol Guldur to discover whether a great evil, the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, was actually Sauron. ![]() Gandalf's story before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is filled with supernatural wonder, as he is one of the Maiar of Valinor, angelic beings who had taken a mortal, human form.
